criminal hearing

HI, my dog got out of my backyard. I live in Long Beach, Caifornia. While he was out he mauled and killed a cat. I now have two hearings with the city. One from the city prosecuter and one with animal control. The city prosecuter is filing a complaint against me for a leash law violation. I thought this would be a fine. But the prosecuters office said that i should get a lawyer because" only fools represent themselves." The office also told me that i could have jail time, or probation. Is this common? I feel bad for the cat, but dogs chase cats. Should i be concerened?

2. California Penal Code Section(s)

that you were cited for having violated. Also, I need to know how many times you've been brought up on charges for this having happened in the past ? Lastly, what is the breed of your dog ?
