what should i do

i live in west virginia, i injured my back on the job, the doctor told me it would cause me problems for the rest of my life. i was told by a friend that comp would have to settle with me for this injury, do i need a lawyer or is his statement even true ? ive never been injured on the job before and dont really know anyone who has to talk to them. what should i do ?

i have a workcomp claim too.i have been told the same thing. i live in illinois and was told this by the workcomp rep with my company.she said once my doctor says i'm the best i will be they will work up a settlement offer.
