I live in North Carolina and was recently caught shoplifting. This is my first offense, I have no criminal record. I was not taken to jail because I had a valid I.D.
I was detained in the store and a police officer came and wrote me a citation. The total value of the items I was caught with was $145. I have a court date in 3 weeks. What do I need to do? Do I need a lawyer? What is the penalty for this crime?
