I live in Washington State. My Father-in-law died leaving less then $300 cash and a $9000 life insurance payment to my wife, the only family survivor. He spent a month in the hospital before he died and we are getting the bills. He was covered by Medicare and a secondary insurer. Are we responsable for any balances owed that his insurance didn't cover?

Simply tell the people sending you bills that he died with $200 to his name and that was used to bury him, and there was no estate and no Will and they can write it off.

The insurance is your wife's.
