My wife's uncle died in 1988, intestate. She was the conservator and guardian for years before his death, since she was the closest relative, he had no living parents, brothers or sisters, or other nephews or neices.
He owned 5 undeveloped city lots, and nothing has ever been done (other than we pay the taxes, keep it mowed, etc.)
Attorneys simply tell us that it would cost far more than the value of the lots for them to tackle it, we would like to have a deed to the lots, can we take it thru probate without an attorney? Any other suggestions?
We even tried NOT paying the taxes, so we could buy it at tax sale. they sold it, then reneged saying they cannot sell an estate property. This appears to be the classic endless circle, 100 years from now it will still be an "unowned" piece of property.
In view of this we are now considering just using it as our own, since apparently state law denies anyone the ability to gain title to the land.
