DEAR MR. FLYNN:

Yes, I would think that probate would be required, since the executor needs to get official papers authorizing him/her to act in claiming all assets, etc. Unless the money/bank accounts were set up to name an alternate beneficiary, the executor would need official papers to prove to the bank that he/she has the authority to claim these funds/assets.
