the laws on scattering cremation ashes

my father in law is terminally ill and said when he passes he wants to be cremated and scattered in lake michigan. i know their are certain laws on ash scattering and wanted to know is it against the law to put ashes in lake michigan or if not, is there a certain route we need to go thru like papers to fill out etc....

Most people, to use a Nike slogan, "just do it", but yes there are probably laws - ask the crematorium or state enviornmental board for openers.
