state of nj: my brother's wife passed away 18 mths. ago after a long illness with no will. her three adult sons have continued to live there. my brother has contracted to sell the house which is in complete dissarray. are they entitled to a full half share of the settlement proceeds? he had to pay funeral expenses and many unpaid credit card debts and medical bills of his deceased wife. they have lived there without paying any rent, utilities, taxes, etc. can he deduct from their share of any proceeds the bills incurred, not only from his wife but also for their lodging, etc. since she died?
