I have received a subpeona to appear as a
witness in a criminal action. I don't
understand what the defendant is being
charged with. It is in code! Can you
translate?
Charges: PC 261(A)(3), PC 261(A)(4) and
PC 289(D)
Thanks!

The sections are in your sttae's criminal code or penal law or whatever your state calls its law. I don't know whatr state you are in. Ask the DA or defendant.

Some states do have their state laws on the net and you can search for them that way. Go to your public library and ask the reference desk if they know the internet address for you.

"PC" stands for Penal Code. Findlaw.com has the California Penal Code online

The California codes that you cite are charging the defendant with rape while the victim was unconscious either due to being asleep, the use of a drug, etc. The possible time in state prison ranges from 3-6 years.
