i recieved a summons for unlawful possesion
of marijuana, can i plead no contest and what will this do for me as far as my permenent record?

It has the exact same consequences as a conviction -- with one minor exception. The no contest merely means your plea can't be used against you by a civil plaintiff (but that's not important here).

Before pleading no contest to anything I would talk to a lawyer to see what kind of penalty you will be facing. It will go on your permanent record and you will have to disclose it on job applications, loans, and the like.
