I was charged and convicted for petty theft in 1996. I plead no contest to the charge. Can I make this info unavailable still to my potential employer?

Sorry. If you pled no contest to the charge you are going to have to disclose it on any applications if asked. You can always add an explanation to the answer to tell your side of the story.
