I need to know what if any law pertains to acquired interest on government loans. I have a friend in michigan that had a loan for school that started out to be a $2000 loan. he was incarcerated 11 yrs ago doing life with no parole. his loan amount now is over $6000. due to interest and legal fees. can the additional charges be dropped if he agrees to make pmts on the original amount? Is it legal to keep accuring these fees when he has been incarcerated for this long? Please help!!! he wants to clean up his record. Thank you.

He needs to contact the folks who administered the student loans and try to work out some kind of deal.

If he explains the circumstances, he might get somewhere.
