My child is in 5th grade in Texas. He informed me that he saw a video regarding Afghanistan that showed a women being shot in the head, skinned bodies, a hanging, people with their throats slashed in graves and women being sprayed with chemicals. I went to the principle and teacher requesting info. They would not give me the title and said the video was "loaned out" and could not be retrieved. The teacher said I could just find another program on CNN because they were all similar. I said I wanted to see what my child saw! I was denied again. This teacher has written to me and said that "I will not be told how or what I shall teach" I have learned that the name of the video is "Beneath the Veil". I have discussed this video with 5 parents out of 90 5th grade students. This teacher has told the entire 5th graders that there is a "mean parent who had a problem with the video and is now going around saying bad things about me" She has also told her students "Don't go home and tell your parents about the gory details in the video because it will only get me in more trouble". She has sent home a terrible letter regarding this "parent" who is liable for slander.
We have spoken with the Principle and the Director of Curriculm and it was agreed that NO letter was to be sent out, in writing.
When we asked the principle why this letter went out after her written confirmation not to, she told us that "this was something that the teacher decided to do on her own".
I do not know what our rights are but I am faced with a child who is having nightmares that Osama Bin Ladin has a gun to his head. We are seeking a child counselor for him. We informed the school that we do not have CNN and my child does not play gruesome video games and does not watch movies that are too violent and this video contained gratuitous violence! We also explained how all child counselors have instructed parents/educators to limit the exposure they have to this subject.
They have ONLY studied Afghanistan for 2 solid months. This teacher told her class that "We can no longer talk about current event because it is scaring a child!" while my child was in the classroom. I don't know what to do if I can do anything. I would appreciate any advice that would be helpful.
Thank you!

what?!?!!?!?!?

i just think that is horrible. I have no legal advice for you, and i am sorry. I was dumbfounded by your story. You do have rights to what your child learns in school. Can you not sit in the class with him/her? Imagine if the teacher was teaching porn or something... it would be a different story, wouldn't it? When i was in middle school, my teacher taught us a lot about her certain type of religion and that wasn't supposed to be taught, especially if it wasn't part of a teaching of a whole bunch of religions. long story short, my mother spoke with the teacher and it was taken care of. this is 100 times worse than that. I pray that you get some type of justification for this.

this won't solve your problem, but we can change the system. we, the decent people of America, need to stand up and remove some of these leaders, and I'm talking about from the Congress, through the educational system, to the lowest level of elected official. You might not believe it, but there are a lot of crooks in politics, and politics has become the focus, not the people. If we were to actually unite and elect good, honest mothers and dads instead of politicians, your problem wouldn't exist, and we'd have neighborhood schools again, and children with excellent educations. You should read the NEA journals, they are some of the most slanted political publications out there. While they may not outright lie, they lie by omission. No wonder good teachers throw up their hands and quit, teaching is all about paperwork to meet governement requirement to fill out the paperwork--come on!
Let's take our country back.
