restraining orders?

Hi- I am in Soutern California. I was just wondering what the basis is for gettting a restraining order placed on someone? What does the idividual need to do to warrent the order? And, how does the restraining order affect those who work together? ie. if I placed the order on someone, would it be my obligation to leave the workplace, or would that fall on the other person? What actually happens? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
