California. Our usual long-distance carrier is AT&T. My mother frequently makes very long calls to relatives on the East coast using Varitec code 10-10-811-5cents/minute. She made a call during a holiday and the circuits were busy. Without her knowledge she was switched to Worldcom-MCI. The bill for 64 minutes on ONE callwas almost $42 instead of the expected $3.20. Nowhere in any fine print does it say this might happen.
I immediately called MCI and they removed it-"a courtesy", they said. After the holidays I will have to look into this further.
