If you have an idea for an invention, where do you start? Should you go ahead and build the prototype BEFORE you attempt to attain the patent? Who can / should you trust (in getting your product to market) to not steal your idea and run with it themselves? Will a patent prevent this?

If the invention is patentable, then a patent can protect you from having others use the idea; however, a patent is not always the best way to protect an idea.

If you have a commercially good idea for an invention, go to a patent law attorney. S/he can be trusted and can give you the proper strategy for safely bringing the product to market, including other ways to protect the idea if a patent is not the best way.
