Non-taxable income if required to live company housing & rent automatically deducted?

Son worked "apprenticship" job for about $6.15/hour, and was *required* to live in company apartment and the rent was automatically deducted from paychecks.

Since he was required as a condition of employement to live there, is that portion of income (the amount of rent) considered non-taxable for income tax purposes?

(Worked in Florida, resident of Calif.)
