Situation: Performed cross country move in 2000. Movers lost or broke a lot of personal items. Submitted claim to movers. Was not reimbursed for several items because paperwork at time of delivery of items was not filled out correctly.
Do I have grounds for claiming a casualty or theft loss on US income tax and/or Michigan state income tax?
(Information of note: I was between homeowners insurance policies during move. Mover's paperwork has two places to denote item status: 1) Small checkboxes indicating presence of each item at each stage of the move. 2) Additional blank at end of line for each item to indicate in writing the disposition of item. The reason mover did not fully reimburse us is that we did not write "missing" in #2 even though the checkbox in #1 was left empty also denoting the item did not arrive. It took the movers over 1 year to decide whether or not to reimburse us.)
