If a married couple living together decides to file separately, can one spouse take all deductions arising from joint ownership, such as mortgage interest and property taxes ? Conversely, can the spouse who is not claiming any deductions including the standard deduction, be the one to list income which has accrued jointly, such as interest and state tax refunds? We are in Illinois. Thank you.
