I know that student loans are deductible, but can graduate school tuition paid during a given year be used as a deduction?

You probably qualify for education credits, specifically the Lifetime Learning Credit. To find out if you do qualify for this or any other tax benefits, get IRS Publication 970, TAX BENEFITS FOR HIGHER EDUCATION, which you can download at the IRS site at: http://www.irs.ustreas.gov/forms_pubs/index.html
