A friend of my son's, age 19, recently tried to rob a bank. No disguise, stayed in small town, picture in the paper. Obviously, not the brightest kid on the block. But, a very kind hearted, extremely hard working kid. What are his chances? What suggestions does anyone have on what to do now?

My response:

"Obviously, not the brightest kid on the block." Well, that's got to be the understatement of the week. I would suggest that he obtain a Criminal defense attorney, practicing Federal law, as soon as possible. Obviously, Bank robbery is extremely serious. What are his chances in what sense?

He will get to enroll in the Failed School for Bank Robbers class 101. Federal Bank Robbery is extremely serious and he could get up to 25 years in a Federal Prison. Federal time unless you don't know is "real" time. 25 years is 25 years. Plan on spending at the minimum $10,000 for an attorney to even touch it. With proof ie. a picture, plan on saving money to put in his inmate account. If the judge wants to, he can send this person to any federal facility in the United States. It is a Federal crime, not a State crime and families don't matter. I would get a public defender and plea bargain away. If you present youself as not guilty and they prove you are, then hasta lavista. Such a waste of young life and to think it will be a permanent record.
