Good morning
I went to South Africa a few months ago and went to the casino. I met a guy there who was playing on the machine next to mine. We started talking and having a few drinks. I live in the USA. He was starting a new business and he had an idea which I was really interested inand felt that I could market it in the USA when I returned. We played next to each other for quite some time, chatted he kept on buying us drinks. I couldn't draw any more money from the Mac machine due to my daily limit and he offered to borrow me some and we could meet up a couple of days later and I could pay him back which I did. We met a couple of days later at the casino I paid him back. I kept a machine next to mine for him and because I told him to play that machine we made an agreement that if either one of us hit a jackpot we would split it. He hit one for R7200.00. I was losing again and he gave me R4800.00 with the promise that I would send him the money back as I was flying out the next day. After what the arrangement was about splitting the jackpot amount I figured I owed him R1400.00. He mentioned over the phone the other day that he is in trouble with the IRS so now he wants me to pay him $600.00=R5400.00 and he is threatening me with going to my boss and with legal action as he is getting the video footage from the casino. We verbally agreed in the casino about the split of the jackpot and in the video you will probably see him giving me the money. Please help me what are my rights? Does a casino have vocal footage? I don't want to lose my job over this stupid situation that I got into cause of stupidity, stress(I was in South Africa because my sister was diagnosed with cancer) and alcohol. Your help will be appreciated. Thank you

I am puzzled, MariaMo. Why do you believe that any one of us here on a U.S. legal forum would know whether an unnamed casino in an unnamed part of South Africa would have "vocal footage" of what transpired between you and your friend?

I worded it wrong. I would like to know if anyone knows whether a casino, any casino, has the capability to record conversations with their videos. I do t think so but I have never had to look into this.. What I would like to know is how to defend myself against this blackmailing scheme to extract money.. He is threatening me with going to my boss with this made up story if I don't give him money. What rights do I have in protecting myself against this. Can I lose my job over some story that someone makes up? What can I do against this lying person who is overseas? Any ideas? I am at a total loss. Never been in a situation like this before.

Not quite sure that I understand the question. The stranger, who seemed really nice and whom me being naive and trusting thought would be honest.. After all I was honest and open with him and gave him my work e mail and my personal e mail... I know... Hind sight I was stupid,, I just wouldn't do things like this to people. I normally try and treat people like I would like to be treated ... Lesson for me... Do not trust no one and do not be nice to no one...

What an interesting lesson to take away from a single experience with a stranger in a foreign country.

If you owe this man from South Africa any money, pay him what you owe. If you don't owe this man from South Africa any money, then don't pay him anything.

If this man from South Africa contacts your employer in Ohio, explain to your employer what you have explained to us here.

And, if you plan to do any traveling again, try to be smarter about who you loan money to or who you borrow money from.

Contact an attorney in Ohio if you find yourself in a legal bind and need some legal assistance as a result of your South African adventures.

Thank you very much for your help. I sent him a letter letting him know that I will be paying the amount I owe him into his account next week but before I do so. I would like a letter from him that once I have paid him what i owe him he will leave me alone.
I don't know how legally binding this is but I am hoping that he will move on to the next person he is trying to scam seeing as I am putting up a fight.

This man from South Africa is not scamming you if you borrowed money from him and did not pay back what you borrowed. He has the right to contact you so that he can be paid what is owed.

You would be the one doing the scamming if you borrowed money with promises to pay back the amount borrowed and then ran off to another country without making good on your promise. ;)

Good luck.

The arrangement was that he would e mail me his banking info so that I could send the money to him. Which he did but in the same e mail he was asking for R4800.00 (app $540) then he asked for $600. I only owe him $150. He is threatening that If I don't pay what he is asking for he will contact my boss. I want to pay him what I owe him and nothing more.
