What is the name of your state? texas
I would like to know what are my rights on getting my belongings from an ex, we broke up approx. 8 months ago and was supposed to get my stuff right after that, but, the ex wouldn't put theem outside for me. I told her that I would be by to get them in the near future. Can I still go get them, and what do I do if she got rid of them? Do I have the local police go with me? Please help, thanks!

You can certainly try. What was her EXACT response when you wrote her a LETTER (certified RRR) asking for their return??

and what do I do if she got rid of them?
You could certainly consider filing a lawsuit for their value; however, the issue of your not picking them up for EIGHT MONTHS!! might just be a 'killer'.

Do I have the local police go with me?
If you feel that there may be a REAL issue of violence or 'breach of peace', it may be appropriate to request a law enforcement escort. It will up to the officers whether they do or not.
