What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? California

I was originally awarded a full judgment for a small claims case against an unlicensed contractor. Contractor claimed he never got served (it was substitute service), but I now have proof that he was. So he filed motion to vacate original judgment ( past the 30 days deadline), and a temporary judge granted the motion. Had a second trial, I wasn't as ready as the first time, and temp judge wasn't on my side and awarded me a judgment in much less amount. What can I do? Can I appeal even if the rules say that I can't?
