Last summer my family was layed off and had to move in with me so i could take care of my dying grandmother and so i had to get rid of my cat which she was allergic to. I found a family in the next neighborhood over that took the cat in and has been taking care of him up until april. In april i received a call from the charlotte police animal rescue saying my cat had been attacked by dogs and that i needed to come get him. I had to explain to them that he was not my cat i had given him to another family but they made me sign a forfeiture of the cat so they could treat him. Today i recieved a call out of the blue from a lady telling me that she wants me to pay her medical expenses because she was bit by "my" cat and that i needed to compensate her. She claims that she was bitten when she was pulling the cat away from the dogs attacking him. I was at work and in complete shock so i didnt get much information from her except that she says i owe her 160$ because she had to go to her doctor, the hosptial, and some hand specialist, on top of that she told me that she was semi retired. When i got home i naturally did some digging on her and found out she is the founder of some real estate company bringing in over 140,000$ a year of which she and her relative are the only employees and she runs a doggy daycare as stated on her facebook as well of several pictures of her dogs one of which some are pitbulls. can i not assume that it might of been her dogs that attacked the cat? How liable am i to pay this woman when she put herself in the position to pull a cat away from dogs attacking it knowing the animal would be stressed and trying to fight for its life, should she not have assumed she was going to recieve some kind of injury from the dogs or the cat? Im not saying she did the wrong thing by anymeans but the family i gave the cat to now magically has no claims to the cat and because the chip was registered to me she called myself and my girl friend saying we owe her 160$, Im in the process of joining the military to be a CTN and cant have lawsuits or anything of the sort showing up in my record as i need to get a top secret clearance. I just want to know if there is any action she can take against me, Sorry for the long and very poorly typed out post. Thank you for your time.

Frankly, I would send her a note indicating that you were not the owner of the cat and you consider this the end of the story.

It's easy to threaten a lawsuit, slightly harder to actually file one, and much more difficult to prevail. If she files one, contact an attorney.

Civil lawsuits of this nature are not going to have an impact on a security clearance.
