So we hired an independent contractor to install some doors on our house. This man came highly recommended from the local store where we were buying the doors. We were stupid and believed him when he asked us to write him a check for the doors so that he could get the "contractor" discount of 20 percent. We sent the check and included a note describing the work he agreed to complete -- ordering and installing doors. The total was for $2,600.

A month passed. Two months. We would call and he would call back with some excuse or other, usually blaming it on the local company that had recommended him to us. Finally, we called BS on him and the company informed us the doors had never been ordered and he finally admitted he had not ordered them, he was going through a divorce, had been in the hospital, etc. But said he had never, ever ripped anyone off.

As far as I can tell, that is true -- no lawsuits or any other judgments in public records other than his divorce papers.

He paid us back $500 initially, but has since resisted efforts for further repayment. We are willing to work with him, perhaps create a payment plan. However, we feel like this money was stolen from us and want to prepare to take legal action, possibly even ask the local law enforcement agencies what can be done.

Any advice?
