What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? CA

My husband and I got married on July 5th, We went through a caterer for food and rentals (tables, chairs, plates, dance floor etc.) We signed a contract stating that we would pay any damages that was done by us or our guests because we felt it was the right thing to do. Well, a week later, while we are on our honeymoon, the caterers (not the rental company they work with) call us to tell us that rental company is asking us to buy a whole new dance floor ($3,000), due to damages at our wedding. They state that the cause is sun, water, and or moisture damage but they cannot define the exact cause. THe caterers said that they sent experts to look at the floor and that it appears that there is nothing wrong and that it was an old dance floor to begin with. We took care of the dance floor and made sure nothing happened to it the whole night. We don't know how long the dance floor was left out because the caterer was in charge of setting it up and taking it down. The cateerer is being really shady and told us just recently that she got the rental company to drop the damages to $1000. We can't pay this, we are still in debt because of the wedding. We don't even believe we are at fault. We signed a contract stated we would pay for damages that we did or our guests, and we did nothing to damage the dance floor .The caterer (not the rental company) keeps calling and asking for money. If we don't pay her, can we get sued? And if we get sued does the caterer even have a case, will we loose, and have to pay her anyway?
