What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Alabama

We agreed to warehouse a piece of equipment for an acquaintance. The piece of equipment was to be picked up within a week. After over two years of urging the owner to pick up this piece of equipment we are told that the owner sold the business that owns this piece of equipment. What are our rights concerning recovering the cost of warehousing this piece of equipment for over two years?

Do you have an agreement stipulating the costs of warehousing the piece of equipment? No? Then you can't charge storage. What you can do at this time is send the legal owner a letter, CRRR, giving them a specified amount of time (30 days is standard) to remove the equipment or you will begin charging storage fees after this 30 day period. Also give them another date, say 90 after the end of the 30 days, that if the equipment is still in your possession, it will be sold to recover the costs of storing the equipment. Send yourself the same letter and keep it sealed, this and the receipt for the certified letter should cover you butt.
