What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Wisconsin

Hi everyone,

Here is the situation, my fiancee's mother died 3 years ago. His girlfriend at the time paid for the funeral. The total cost was roughly $4000. He paid her back $3000 cash with no receipt saying he paid. There is also nothing in writing saying he would pay her back. After they broke up, she got tired of waiting for the last $1000 and decided it was a lost cause. Here we are three years later, and he was served papers saying she was suing him for $4000 for the repayment of the funeral costs. To our knowledge all she has is a receipt with both of their names listed from the funeral home saying the total cost was paid.

Is there anything that should be done, or is this going to be a case of he said she said?
