What is the name of your state? CA

It appears that I will need to sue my painting contractor for not honoring the contract. I have not had the work repaired yet. I planned on getting an estimate from another licensed contractor and bringing pictures and copies of the original contract and receipts. Does anyone know if I have to have the work done before I sue? If not, how many estimates do I have to bring to court for the judge? I'm in CA.

Thanks!
