Loan vs Gift

I have filed judgement against someone who defines the loans I made to him as gifts since we were in a relationship. How does the law define loan vs gift? He stated to me that he signed nothing, therefore, it was a gift. This money was loaned to him to cover bail from an assault charge, attorney fees, cell phone bill, etc.

It defines it just like the dictionary defines it.
