What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? California

Our neighbor's cat was in our backyard, chasing after our pet rabbit. This is the 3rd time that this has happened. Each time by a different cat. This 3rd time, we did not know that it was the neighbor's cat because we've never seen this one before and it didn't have a collar. My husband heard a comotion and walked outside to see the cat chasing our rabbit. He tried to scare it off, but it continued to chase our rabbit so my husband grabbed a stick and hit the cat once to stop it from attacking and killing our rabbit. He end up breaking the cat's arm. The neighbor is suing us for the medical bill. Are we responsible for the medical bill if the "stray" cat was in our fenced off backyard, attacking our rabbit and we're just protecting our pet?

if it is as you describe, then no. If the cat was no longer chasing the rabbit, you are quite possibly liable.
