What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Virginia

A few months ago I received a $24 bill, with no explanation, from a dentist office that we had not been to in almost 3 years. I called and told them that I needed an explanation of what I was being billed for. They sent several pages of a statement with "unspecified procedures" and several of the computer print out numbers crossed out and new amounts hand written in. I called again and told them that this was unsatisfactory.

Today, I received a letter from a lawyer in Florida saying that if I didn't pay by the end of the month that they would advise the dentist to take me to court and I may be responsible for additional costs.

What should I do?
