What is the name of your state? Texas

I loaned a friend/aquaintance/**** buddy $300, with the promise that it would be repaid after her daughter (age 16) received her income tax return.

In addition, I paid for a trip to a clinic and prescription for her daughter, who was suffering from some type of knee injury: cost $150.

Today, when I tried to approach the subject of repaying me, she told me that she's gone back with her "husband", the daughter moved out and is living in a motel (doesn't know where), and the loan is her daughter's responsibility, not hers.

Is $450 too small an amount to take to small claims court? If not, how do I get started? I have no "proof" that I loaned the $300, other than I think the daughter will support me on the matter; however, as mentioned above, I have no idea where she is. Also, should I first write a formal-looking letter to try to get her to pay before taking her to court.

Thanks for any help you can provide...
