What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? WI

We had a car for sale and took money down on the car, the buyer agreed he would pay the remaining balance and pick up the car on "Friday" (which was 1 week from the transacton). The buyer asked for a reciept, so we simply wrote on a piece of paper that he paid $200 and would pay the balance when he picked up the car. We also wrote that we would not sell it since he put money down. Well its been 2 months and he has still not paid the remaining $150 - we have not even heard from this guy. We called him several times and left messages, but he doesn't return our calls. This guy could have died for all we know. The only time he tried to contact us is when he said he was short the money, but he could still come pick it up (he was trying to get the car for less than our agreed contract). We said no, and we haven't heard from him since. So now we have this car that we technically cannot sell, eventhough we still get calls and offers for. What are we supposed to do? We want this car off of our lot, but he won't pay up!

What is a reasonable amount of time for you to hold it ?

All you have is a piece of paper as you stated .

The would be buyer has not answered you calls .

Sell it , but keep his deposit set aside , in case he contacts you , and give it back ( with a piece of signed paper again that he received his deposit back ) .

That's not a bright way to make a deal .

At least put a By date to pay in full , or the buyer forfeits a deposit , if there's a next time .
