What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? California

I co-signed a lease for a friend on 01/2008 but he failed to make the payments so I made a payment for $2806 on 04/2008 and he promised to pay me back but then when he fell behind on the monthly payments again I made an agreement with the leasing company and I paid an aditioinal $2000 to get me out of the lease all of this was put on my credit card which has a composite interest of 22.23% he made me a payment of $1000 in 10/2008 and another of $1000 in 11/2008 but has not made any more payments i made him make up a contract and in the contract he said i made him a monotary loan of $3000 and promised to pay by 02/01/2009 but again has not do i calculate the interest myself before submitting to small claims or should i let the judge calculate it and how long will it take to collect. do i need to take any extra steps to make sure i win I have a check from him for $2806 that the bank pretty much told me no funds were in that acct and i have text messages saying he is going to pay me
