What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Plaintiff resides in New York Defendant resides in New Jersey

My fiance called off the wedding on February 19, 2009. The wedding was suppose to take place on May 24, 2009. I have made payments in a total of $5,170 towards the wedding. He contributed approx. $600. I would like to sue him to recover the money I paid. I tried getting the money from the vendors but the payments and deposits are nonrefundable. How can I proceed in small claims court? What are my chances in winning? How can I prepare my case?
