I had front brake service done at a local brake and muffler specialist on my 2002 Saturn SL1. My wife drives the car all the time and told me a day or two after, that there was a clanking noise when she braked. I drove it and heard it periodically. So we took it back and they drove it and said they could find nothing wrong. We took to them about and total of 5 times. one time they said they replaced the "hardware."

After enough frustration, We scheduled an appointment with Saturn and they looks at the brakes and said that the pads were "seized" to the caliper. I was a mechanic in the Army for 4 years and worked on Humvees and heavy duty trucks. I needed clarification from the Saturn mechanic, because I was not understanding the terminology being used. I spoke with the tech that did the job. He said that the pads used did not fit correctly in the calipers and the a retaining tab was used the keep the pads in place. He stated that Saturn OEM pads do not use tabs and are precisly made to fit the caliper guide rails. He also stated that the rotors did not look like they were resurfaced, when I was charged for it.

I contacted the local repair shop and spoke with their General Manager. She agreed to refund the brake service she charged me.

My dilemma is, I wouldn't have had to go to Saturn in the first place had the previous establishment done the brake job right in the first place. I asked the General Manager to refund the money I had to unexpectedly foot to have it fixed right. He said, "No, I am not going to pay for the work Saturn did."

Is this worth proceeding with a successful outcome or just suck it up and chalk it up to " You get what you pay for?"

If you were refunded by the original shop, then you should let it go. You paid for a service from Saturn and it sounds like you received good quality service, so you're not entitled to anything besides the refund from the original shop.
