What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? PA
Would purchasing a home for a relative who receives SSDI/SSI cause him to lose his benefits?
Alternatively, what if we purchase the home in our own name and rent it to him?
SSDI is disability benefits earned from working history . That will not change unless the person works and earns over the Gainful employment limits .
SSI , in this case makes up the difference ( so to speak ) to the max. allowed ( if SSDI amount is lower than the max .) It's a social program .
You also have to watch out for Medical coverage and assets ( Ie: Medicare/Medicaid ) .
While owning and living in a home is allowed under SSI , a sale and proceeds would be considered assets then .
The recipient really should check with their local SSA office in person with questions like this .You could go along too with questions.
SSDI - it would not matter - See above .
Yes you can purchase a home and rent it to the person . Perfectly legal .
