What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? California
We are temporarily residing in Australia. We requested and have confirming documentation from SS that our social security checks were to be deposited directly into our Australian bank. My husbands "went missing" in December but 2 paper checks were sent instead - one to our daughters address in Seattle, and one to our address in Australia. As it takes 6 -8 weeks to clear these checks (with hefty bank charges), on the advice of Social Security in Manila, we crossed out the face of the checks, wrote VOID, emailed the copies to Manila, then mailed them directly back to SS in Manila. This event started December 3rd, it is now January 19th and no money is forthcoming. Our 50 plus emails have resulted in "be patient, its in the system"! We are retired, have no other sources of income, obviously Christmas was grim, and we had to borrow money from our son to pay our rent - a loan which needs to be re-paid. All we want is a straight forward answer as to when the funds will be paid.
Are there any laws protecting us or requirements for social security to make good on an error they created?
In hopes of receiving a response, Judy Katzin
