In New Jersey, as in all states, in order to qualify for unemployment insurance, one must first have enough covered wages in the look back period, or quarters. This will be just the last year or the last year and a half, NOT your entire previous work history. If you do not have enough covered wages in the quarters immediately before the date you file the claim, you will not be able to receive unemployment benefits regardless of other circumstances.

By definition, social security disability benefits are paid because you are unable to work. Unemployment insurance benefits are paid because you are out of work through no fault of your own and are able, available and actively seeking another job. For Unemployment purposes, you must be released by your doctor to work again if you were put out of the previous job due to health reasons.

Sometimes people who are receiving unemployment insurance will be in the process of filing for SSDI as they are receiving benefits, but as soon as they are approved for benefits, they must cease to receive unemployment or it will be considered fraud.
