| | | SSI eligibility question Hi. I'm Ashley. I'm 18 years and from Ohio.
I'm a little embarrassed to ask this question, but thought it couldn't hurt to get the advice of others.
My two therapist's told me I should look into applying for SSI.
I suffer from Borderline Personality Disorder, Anxiety Disorder, Self-Injury, Hypochondriasis, Phobia's, and Depression to the point where I can barely leave my house. I've tried to attain jobs the past few months and was offered one, but had to turn it down because I was having panic attacks the night before reporting to work for my first day because of the thought of working.
I've had to be homeschooled my highschool years because I couldn't handle the stress and anxiety of a school environment. I was always so anxious and wasn't able to concentrate on my studies. My grades dropped, and now that I'm homeschooled I'm an A & B student again.
I held a job in 2004, but had to quit because I was starving myself all day because I was so anxious about becoming ill while at work. I would report to work usually in the evening so I wouldn't be able to eat at all until I came home from work at about 9:30, so basically I was starving myself for 24 hours and then eating a small meal, and then starving myself for 24 more hours, etc. After awhile I couldn't concentrate on my work because I was dizzy and weak from not eating enough.
In November of 2005 I was put into the hospital for self injury and suicide ideation. Was so stressed out there that I couldn't eat and could hardly sleep.
Money is extremely tight. My mom doesn't make enough money to pay our bills. It is a struggle to pay my copayments and buy my prescriptions. I see both my therapist's twice a week so we dish out about $250 a month on copayments, and sometimes more if I become physically ill and need to see a regular doctor. We just can't afford, especially since I'm unable to work. It would be nice to have the assistance of SSI to help me pay for own therapists so I don't have to burden my mother with them.
I'm not the type of person that would rather sit at home and collect a check. In all honesty, if I could work then I most definitely would.
I was just wondering if someone like me would qualify or should I just not even waste the time?

By what you have described yes I believe you have a shot at it. What would have been better is if your parents would have applied for you early on. Even if you got denied at that point there would be a record of attempts. If you apply now, the one thing that will look bad on you (well, not bad) is your age and obviously you can't fix that. GENERALLY, the younger you are (adult age) the harder it is to obtain but even if denied on the first try file the appeal, a high percentage of people are denied their first time so don't let that discourage you.

I have alot of the same symptoms as you plus a few more (I'm bipolar) and I was approved on my first try. Many people aren't but if you've been hospitalized (which you were) you usually have a better shot.

| As of 18 , you will be considered an adult ..
By what I have put in quotes , it appears you are still living with mom .
As such , any and all household income will be looked at to see if you are eligible , and if so , to what amount .
You may be eligible for state's assistances for your medical coverage , and personal cash grant , if your mother can't afford it , and writes you a Statement for state agencies where you should/would apply .
As someone mentioned , your mother should have applied for SSI for you as a child before age 18 .
Once you are 18 , you are considered an Adult and the eligibility standard to meet are tougher .
