If she just turned 65 and was divorced in 1986, she had nearly 30 years to get a job, support herself, and save for her retirement. She chose to live off child support and the goodness of her children. That is not anyone's problems but hers - and yours since you enabled her after CS stopped.
I consider a single mother who in their 30s to be irresponsible (and incredibly lazy) for not planning ahead. I am older than she is and worked with 4 children - including 2 toddlers. Being a homemaker was never an option since I had my family to support. I and others should not have to support your mother in her old age when she made bad choices.
