They want me to confirm records from 1981

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? New Jersey

This is unreasonable. I just applied for Soc.Sec retirement which I am planning to live off of.
How can they ask me to confirm employment records from 1981?
Do I have any recourse?
I cannot afford to hire a lawyer as I have no income until I get my SocSec.

Well , depending on the type of income and employment you had , they may require proof .

If you were a hire and paying taxes out of your wages ,SSA would have your records of earnings .
