This happened in Forsyth County, NC (Winston-Salem, NC). Basically my question is this: Can I plead this down to a lesser offense? I obtained what they call a "certified true copy" of my drivers record from the NCDMV and it is clean. I don't mind paying the fine, but I would like to duck any increases in my insurance. Any help is greatly appreciated. And yes, I know the rules about professional dress, etc :)

Ask the prosecuting attorney. It's up to him/her.
The officer that gave me the ticket told me to obtain that "certified true copy" to show the DA that I have a clean record. I have heard that it is possible to plead down to a non-moving violation to avoid points on my license (and hence a large insurance increase). This is what I would like to do. Just not sure how to go about doing it.
