Hello I live in california los angeles county.
I had a co-worker that had a liver and kidney failure around september and she had recovery period until january and she came back to work. She called out from work one day, and called my cell phone during lunch hours stating that she's been throwing up all day and asking me for ride to the hospital. due to her medical condition, I jumped into the car and picked her up. On the way to the hospital I couldn't really pay attention to the speed limit because she wasn't doing too well. 4 blocks down from the hospital, cop pulled me over stating I'm speeding 65mph on 35mph zone. I explained situation but he seem like he was believing me. He offered ambulance and she said No. 1) 4 blocks down from hospital and waiting for an ambulance? 2) she just recovered from kidney and liver failure she couldn't afford another medical bill that would cause around $400-700 dollars. Her madication by it self is costing her $300++ per visit. Cop said " If you don't need ambulance it's not an emergency" he took my license and registration I almost felt like he's taking some good time writing a ticket under the tree. After he gives me a ticket I asked him if he could atleast escort me to the hospital? He said "No cars will yeild to me, not you drive slow" I'm not sure but I feel like my rights has been violated? Am I protected under certain law under this situation?

Thank you very much for reading this.

Pay the ticket. Next time tell your friend to call 911, the trip to the hospital will be at tax payers expense.

No! Your friend's ailment - serious or not - does NOT give you the right to put others at risk! If it were so serious that it necesitated such a wild ride to the hospital, an ambulance was the best bet. The police are NOT going to "escort" you due to the liability that they woul adopt in doing so. And they are not going to transport your friend for the same reason.

The officer may empathize with your friend's plight and financial situation, but this does not justify putting others at risk. You could have converted her stomach pain into a multi-car pileup with serious injuries or fatalities.

A judge may ask how your friend is doing now, but it will be followed by an admonishment to slow down and then a "Guilty" pronouncement.
