Canadian with US speeding ticketOk, So I live in Canada but got popped doing 90mph in a 65 zone in Maine. Now it was a rental car and my brother was messing with the dials when I was pumping gas, and I thought it was 90km/h (~55 mhp!). Truly believed that when the cop ticketed me but he was an ass. -Now, I didn't pay my ticket. Does anyone know if I try to cross the border into Maine if they ID me at the border do I just get turned away, or actually arrested? -If I end up with a warrent for my arrest. Then that's only if I get ID'ed in Maine correct? No other state? I'm a full time student and was lucky to get rent paid this week, let alone a $258 fine. So it didn't get paid (but I did send in the ticket, just without the cheque!) Thanks!! |

| Thanks dude. It was a rental with 1 set of numbers on the speedometer. So it only said 90. I rented the car in Canada and it was 90 km/h. Well my brother switched it to mph, so the same 90 was now mph, but I didn't know the difference. I didn't pick up on the fact I was driving 30mph faster on the interstate either. Very little traffic. I was actually really nice to the cop. I was quite proud of myself. Cause I really didn't think I was doing anything wrong. Aw well. It will be very rarely that I'm ever in Maine again anyway. Thanks for filling me in with the warrant info and border questions! Blue skies! |

Your excuse is creative enough to have possibly had your ticket tossed and in all likelihood have it reduced. You also could have got some payment plan. I wouldn't want a warrant for my arrest in a neighboring country. A warrant in one state could come up if your name is run in another state or if run at the border. Ignoring things today is what causes bigger headaches in the future. Your blue skies today could easily be thunderclouds tomorrow. I would call in and make payment arrangements, I'm sure lots of people are in your position. The longer you wait the worse it will get.

| I'm sorry, but in this case I have to say that if you can't visually tell the difference between 90 and 55 mph, then you deserved to receive the citation, and you should consider taking some driving lessons for your own as well as other driver's safety. Also let the instructor know that you are having difficulty in understanding the dashboard speedometer. |
