Driving with broken tail lights. How do I fight it?

What is the name of your state?
California

I need some help fighting this case. Here's the story: I had rented a trailer from U-Haul to help my girlfriend move. While testing the lights, my tail light fuse blew, could be any factor, but most likely, the worker said that a wrong ground connection usually does that. I figured I'd be done with the move before sunset, so I didn't worry about changing the fuse, yet. Unfortunately, our last trip came right after sunset, and a police pulled me over for my busted tail light. Now, the questions I have are:

1. Why was I written up for "driving without required lights" and not a "fix-it-ticket?" One being a correctable violation and the other not.

2. I requested a trial, so what is my proper course of action should the police officer decide to testify?

3. Any other advice would help and be greatly appreciated in fighting this case.

Thank you!!!

**A: please clarify. You got the ticket for a non-working tail light on your vehicle or the U-Haul trailer?

Clarification

I got ticketed for, what seems like, non-working lights on my vehicle. The tail lights on both my truck and the trailer weren't working when I got pulled over, but I got cited for my vehicle. When I went to my arraignment hearing, the judge had told me that the infraction had already been reported to the DMV and a point awarded.

Please, need advice!

I was wondering if anyone out there could possibly offer some advice? My court date's in 2 weeks and I haven't had much success getting any help. Any input would do right about now. Thank you!

What do you want to hear? You have given no proof that the ticket was not valid. You admit your tail lights did not work. There is no magic spell that can be cast to fix your problem. The only recommendation I could give would be to play dumb with the judge. It works with blondes with big hooters all the time.

My main concern is, why was I written up for a moving violation and not a "fix-it-ticket?" And if possible, can I get the violation reduced to a correctable violation? And if I can, how so?

Ask the judge.

So that's what I've been doing wrong all these years.
