What is the name of your state? NY

While being pulled over for another traffic infraction, i was also issued a summons for not having my insurance card. i was once told that if you receive a ticket within 2 miles of your home, you can request to get the information (license, registration and/or insurance card) or have the oficer escort you there. Is this true?

I presume you were once told there really is a Santa Claus, Easter Bunny, and tooth fairy as well.

Amazing. I post two responses and receive two very self-assured responders who could not be further off-base. I consulted with a former traffic judge who informed me that this theory/rumor is, in fact, true and that if you mail in or bring in a copy of the missing item (license, reg, ins card) to the DMV with the stated explanation, they cannot charge a fee, fine, etc.

Once again, I appreciate the response. I only wish, however, it was accurate (despite the snide nature and tone). Makes us wonder, better yet realize, that this site is simply conjencture and that the posters may very well be people who have never driven a car or appeared in Court.

Please post the state law that allows this "2 mile rule". I can fine one that says anytime you are on a public road, no distance listed, you are required to carry your licence, registration and proof of insurance.

Clearly! It's amazing at the crap you have had to put up with. Don't listen to these idiots - take the missing info the the DMV and if they even think about imposing their stupid fines or fees, you make sure you set them straight and don't pay a penny. Don't be afraid to raise a ruckus if they act like typical robot DMV workers, either.

Good luck.

Well first thing, mailing it in or bringing ot in later is not the same as the situation you originally asked about. I don't think there is a state in the union that requires what you asked.

Now as far as showing proof later, I couldn't tell you. NY may allow it although it seems Racer72 seems to have found statutes that require proof to be carried with you.

So go ahead and do as YAG posted.:D He is a NY attorney and I'm sure he knows what he is talking about. I'm sure the folks you will deal with on this situation will be more than glad to have you tell them the laws of NY.

Precisely! The people at the DMV don't know their ass from a hole in the ground, and, believe it or not, actually welcome it when people explain the law to them (it's not like they learn it in "training"). The problem is they're not too smart so you have to sort of yell it at them, multiple times, before they will figure it out. Don't let them dissuade you by saying that they're going to get their supervisor, stand your ground and yell even louder. Eventually, they'll get the hint that you're not going to be pushed around like the other DMV sheep and you'll get what you rightly deserve.

I hope OP has sense of humor... It would be interesting to learn what he actually does at the DMV :D

Well, if he has any sense, he'll yell and scream and throw a huge fit until they listen to him. :D

Shouldn't he have a homemade t-shirt on that says "DMV BITES". on the front?

Nonsense. Most of those people can't read. I'd go with a nice clean t-shirt with a big "one-finger salute" printed on both sides.

And come to think of it, nothing screams "listen to me" more than a KKK hat.
