finding laws

What is the name of your state? Michigan

Recently, I was cited for speeding in a school zone. At the exact time the lights started flashing, I was already in the zone, past the flashing light so of course did not know that lights had turned on. Obviously, I am fighting this ticket. I am interested in finding the exact law that I "violated". How/where can I find out the exact law so I can look at it in detail? On my ticket it says something like offense code 5.12. Hope this helps. Thanks!

"At the exact time the lights started flashing, I was already in the zone, past the flashing light so of course did not know that lights had turned on."
*** The lights are NOT the official designator of school zone application per the statute shown below. Their purpose is to draw attention to the school zone.

"Obviously, I am fighting this ticket."
*** In reviewing the statute (below), it looks like you are going to have an 'uphill' fight.

"I am interested in finding the exact law that I "violated". How/where can I find out the exact law so I can look at it in detail? On my ticket it says something like offense code 5.12."
*** I think the statute you are looking is in the Michigan Vehicle Code and it can be found at:

Thank you for all your help. I checked out the statute and it was very helpful. The main reason I am fighting the ticket is the fact that the permanent school zone signs says "School Zone 25 mph in effect when flashing." There are no times posted. So that means it would only be effective when the lights were actually flashing. Since it was NOT flashing when I entered the school zone, I could only assume that the school zone speed limit was NOT in effect. The cop was coming from the opposite direction, entering the school zone sometime after me, by which time, the light was flashing from his direction, so when he came up to me, he assumed that I was purposely ignoring the school zone sign. We double checked with the school, and they said that the school zone comes into effect at exactly 3:30, which was the exact time I was already in the MIDDLE of the school zone. I have spoken with both the cop's superior and the local prosecuting attorney's office and they both think I have a very good case, so I hope it will go well. All I can do is give my version of the event the best I can and leave it to the judge. Thanks again!
